2013 Annual Town Meeting on Nantucket began April 2, 2013. There were several energy related articles up for debate:
- Article 41 attempted to ban the construction of wind turbines on and around the island for 5 years. This article was deemed illegal by Town Council and was revised by the sponsor. Ultimately what passed was that current Wind Energy Conversion System bylaws will be studied and reviewed by the Planning Board.
- Article 71 attempted to encourage solar energy development at the airport and sewer beds. Barbara Gookin sponsored this article, as well as Articles 72 and 84 (see below). She elaborates on the intent of these articles at a Civic League event March 16, 2013.
- Article 72 attempts to use renewable resources for the electric car charging stations. This article failed.
- Article 84 sought to allow the landfill to be leased to a private vendor who would develop a 100kW wind generation there. This article failed to meet the 2/3 vote requirement.
